In Australia in 2026, fractional CFO costs sit between roughly $1,500 and $15,000 a month. Most businesses turning over $1m to $20m pay $3,000 to $8,000 a month for forecasting, monthly reporting and a senior finance person in the room. A full-time CFO in Brisbane costs $300,000 or more before super, bonus and on-costs.
Virtual CFO cost in Australia sits somewhere between $1,500 and $15,000 a month in 2026, and the honest answer to “which end?” is: it depends on how much of a CFO you are actually buying. A monthly review and a quarterly planning session sit at the bottom of that range. Weekly involvement, board reporting and lender conversations sit in the middle. Something close to a full-time finance leader, spread across a few days a week, sits at the top.
Published Australian price surveys put the typical SME spend at $3,000 to $6,000 a month. Compare that with a full-time chief financial officer, where recruiters report Brisbane base salaries of $300,000 to $470,000 before super, bonus and on-costs, and you can see why so many owners of $2m to $30m businesses have stopped trying to hire one.
What does a virtual CFO actually cost in Australia?

Every firm packages it differently, but Australian pricing published in 2026 lands in three bands, and the labels vary far more than the numbers do.
- Light touch, about $1,500 to $3,000 a month: a monthly review of the numbers, a quarterly planning session, and someone to call when the bank asks a question. Suits businesses under about $2m turnover with a bookkeeper already in place.
- Fractional CFO, about $3,000 to $8,000 a month: weekly or fortnightly involvement, a rolling cash flow forecast, monthly management reports with commentary, budget tracking, and board or lender reporting. This is where most $2m to $20m businesses land.
- Near full-time, about $8,000 to $15,000 a month, more for $30m-plus groups: several days a week, multiple entities, capital raising or exit preparation, and a CFO who effectively sits on the leadership team.
Hourly rates for senior virtual CFO work run from about $150 to $450 an hour. Keep that in mind when a $4,000 retainer is sitting next to a $250 hourly rate. At 16 hours a month, they cost the same. The difference is what you are paying for.
What pushes the price up or down
Five things move a quote more than anything else. None of them is your turnover on its own, which surprises people.
- Frequency. A monthly touchpoint and a weekly one are different jobs. Weekly cash flow for a construction business with progress claims and retentions is several hours a week, every week.
- Number of entities. A trading company, a holding company, a property trust and an SMSF that owns the premises are four sets of numbers to keep consistent.
- Who else reads the reports. If a bank, a board, an investor or a franchisor needs monthly reporting, it has to be lender-grade rather than owner-grade, and that takes longer.
- The state of the bookkeeping. A fractional CFO working off a reconciled, current file is doing CFO work. One working off a file three months behind is doing bookkeeping at CFO rates. Fix the bookkeeping first, or bundle it.
- What is happening this year? A refinance, an acquisition, a new site, or an ATO payment plan adds scope for a period, then falls away.
At Juce Advisory, we scope on those five factors rather than on hours. Our packages sit in the fractional band above, with no lock-in contract, so scope can move up or down as the business does.
Virtual CFO cost vs a full-time CFO salary
The full-time comparison is where the virtual model earns its keep, and the gap is wider than most owners expect because salary is only part of the cost.
Robert Half’s 2026 Australian salary data puts a CFO of a large or multinational business in Sydney at $277,950 at the 25th percentile, $332,450 at the median and $408,750 at the 75th, excluding super and bonus. Robert Walters’ 2026 survey has Brisbane CFOs at $300,000 to $470,000, with smaller or privately owned businesses typically paying a base of $180,000 to $300,000.
Now add the rest. Superannuation guarantee moved to 12 per cent on 1 July 2025. Queensland payroll tax, workers’ compensation and leave loading add several points more. A short-term bonus for a Fractional CFO commonly runs 25 to 40 per cent of base, and a retained executive search fee of 25 to 35 per cent of first-year package lands in year one. Eightx’s 2026 worked example takes a $370,000 base to roughly $715,000 all-in in the first year and about $571,000 a year after that.
Set that against $48,000 to $96,000 a year for a fractional CFO in the $4,000 to $8,000 band. Even at the top of the virtual range, $180,000 a year, you are at less than half the recurring cost of a modest full-time hire. That is where the widely quoted “about 50 per cent less” comes from, and for most businesses under $20m it understates the savings.
The trade-off is real. A full-time CFO is in the building every day, owns the finance team, and can be pulled into anything. A virtual CFO is scoped. If your business needs a finance leader forty hours a week, hire one. Most businesses under $20m do not.
Why hourly rates are the wrong way to buy a CFO
Hourly billing rewards the adviser for taking longer and punishes you for calling. That is backwards for a role whose whole value is being available when a decision needs a number behind it. It also hides the real question, which is not “what is your rate?” but “what will I have at the end of each month that I do not have now?” A useful engagement has a defined output: a 13-week cash flow updated every week, a management report pack by a set day each month with commentary you can act on, a budget you are measured against, and a person who has read the numbers before you ring. Juce Advisory prices on that output, as a fixed monthly fee for a defined scope. The owner of a $6m electrical contractor should not be deciding whether a question is worth $250 before asking it.
Is a fractional CFO worth it at your turnover?

A range is not advice, so here is where we take a position.
$500k to $2m turnover
Usually not a full virtual CFO yet. Get the bookkeeping and financial control right first: a clean file, monthly reconciliations, BAS lodged on time and basic cash flow. A light-touch quarterly review is worth it if you are about to borrow, hire or expand. Spending $5,000 a month on CFO work while the file is a mess is money in the wrong place.
$2m to $10m turnover
This is the band where the virtual CFO cost pays for itself fastest. Businesses this size have wages, stock or WIP, and lenders, and the owner is still making most decisions from the bank balance. A forecast that shows a cash gap eight weeks out, or a margin review that finds one product line has been losing money since the last price rise, is often worth more than the annual fee in a single decision.
$10m to $50m turnover
The question here is fractional versus full-time, not whether. With multiple entities, external funders and a growth plan, the top virtual band at $8,000 to $15,000 a month buys most of what a full-time CFO does at less than half the recurring cost, with no recruitment fee and no six-month ramp-up. Once the finance function needs a manager every day, hire the CFO and keep the fractional firm for tax and specialist projects.
How to compare virtual CFO quotes
Two quotes at $4,000 a month can be completely different products. The cheapest one usually assumes a perfect bookkeeping file and a single entity. Ask each firm these five questions and put the answers side by side.
- What do I receive each month, on which day, and can I see an anonymised example?
- Who does the work, who is the senior person I can call, and is it the same person every month?
- Is bookkeeping included, assumed, or charged separately? Who fixes it if the file is behind?
- What happens to the fee if we take on a refinance or an acquisition this year?
- Is there a lock-in contract, and what does leaving look like?
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a virtual CFO for under $2,000 a month?
Yes, at the light-touch end: a monthly or quarterly review of the numbers, a planning session, and phone access for the occasional question. Published Australian ranges start around $1,500 a month for that level, and it suits businesses under about $2m turnover with a solid bookkeeper. It does not stretch to weekly cash flow management or lender reporting.
Do I still need a bookkeeper if I have a fractional CFO?
Yes. The CFO role starts where bookkeeping ends. Reconciliations, payroll, accounts payable, and BAS preparation need to be current before forecasting and reporting mean anything. Some firms, including Juce Advisory, bundle bookkeeping and financial control with Virtual CFO so one team owns the whole file. Others expect your existing bookkeeper to feed them. Either works, but make sure the quote says which.
How many hours a month does a fractional CFO actually spend on my business?
For a fractional engagement in the $3,000 to $8,000 band, expect somewhere between 12 and 40 hours a month across the senior CFO and the analysts behind them, with more in months that include a budget, a refinance or year-end.
Is virtual CFO cost tax deductible?
Fees paid for advisory, reporting and financial management in running a business are generally deductible as a business expense, in the same way accounting and bookkeeping fees are. How that applies to your structure depends on your circumstances, so confirm it with your tax adviser. This is general information rather than advice about your own position.
